Vector
An object with direction and magnitude that can be added and scaled.
Algebra & Number · Accessible first encounter
Linear algebra studies vectors, transformations, and the structures that survive addition and scaling. Its ideas power differential equations, graphics, machine learning, data analysis, quantum theory, and much of modern applied mathematics.
01 · Opening mystery
A 2 × 2 matrix contains only four entries, yet it can rotate, reflect, shear, stretch, or flatten every vector in the plane. The remarkable part is not the number of entries—it is the requirement of linearity.
Once we know where the two coordinate basis vectors go, every vector is forced to follow because every vector is a linear combination of those basis directions.
Make a prediction. The laboratory is designed to challenge or refine it.

Change the matrix entries or choose a preset. The pale grid is the original plane; the colored grid is its image. The highlighted parallelogram is the transformed unit square.
03 · The big idea
A transformation T is linear when it respects vector addition and scalar multiplication: T(u + v) = T(u) + T(v) and T(cu) = cT(u). This means a linear transformation cannot bend a straight grid line into a curve.
A matrix is a coordinate description of such a transformation. Matrix multiplication is composition: applying B and then A produces the matrix AB.
A linear transformation preserves vector addition and scalar multiplication.
An object with direction and magnitude that can be added and scaled.
The signed factor by which a square matrix scales area or volume.
A nonzero direction that the transformation scales without turning off its line.
04 · A beautiful result
The unit square is spanned by the basis vectors e₁ and e₂. After transformation, its sides become the matrix columns. The resulting parallelogram has signed area ad − bc.
This single number detects several behaviors at once: its magnitude gives the area factor, a negative sign records an orientation reversal, and zero announces that two-dimensional space has collapsed into a line or point.
For a diagonal matrix, the unit square becomes a rectangle with area ad.
The off-diagonal terms tilt the sides; subtracting bc corrects for the overlapping shear contribution.
The same quantity is multiplicative: det(AB) = det(A)det(B), matching the fact that area scales multiply under successive transformations.
05 · Why this subject matters
Differential equations use eigenvectors to separate coupled motion. Computer graphics multiplies coordinates by matrices to position objects. Data science represents observations as vectors and searches for lower-dimensional directions that retain important variation.
The deeper course moves beyond arrays toward vector spaces, subspaces, bases, dimension, and linear operators—ideas that apply equally to polynomials, functions, signals, and matrices.
Eigenvalues reveal growth, decay, and oscillation modes.
Vectors and matrices represent data, parameters, and transformations.
Coordinate changes build directly on linear transformations.
